Van Trouble + Savannah + Charleston

April 06, 2017 Savannah, GA, USA

Well, aren't we the worst bloggers ever? We have had a pretty whirlwind few weeks! Since we landed in Tampa I feel like we've just been going, going, going.

I don't think that either of us has written about it - but if you already know all about this, and now you think I'm a big idiot then that's okay too - but! we have been having a ton of RV issues. When we published the post on the Everglades we were sitting inside of a giant RV dealership waiting for ours to be fixed. Three days in a garage full of RV's that work when yours doesn't isn't great for the road trippers spirit. We were pretty pissed by the end of it and Blake went into angry "can I speak with your manager" mode at least 5 times. After working in customer service for a while I was sort of embarrassed but then also thought... maybe he'll annoy them enough that they just fix it (fingers crossed). No such luck though so we moved on with the same issues. Such was the case after visiting three more RV repair places.. so still on the struggle bus with the bus but that's okay! Thankfully we had some really fun stops planned to take our minds off of it!

After we left Port St. Lucie we drove like maniacs to Savannah! I have been so excited about it since before we left for this trip. I had heard so many great things and couldn't wait to get there. We had planned on spending 4 days in the city and since the RV repairs took up so much time we only ended up with 2! I was determined to get the most out of it so we drove into town on the Wednesday before St. Patricks day pretty early and posted up at the visitors center. Did you guys know that Savannah has the second largest St. Patricks day celebration in the US? Neither did we, but it was nuts! The city really goes all out. Green fountains, tents set up everywhere, signs, decorations, you name it.
We spent the morning walking around the Historic District through all of the squares. There are gorgeous trees draped over the streets and vines growing everywhere. The homes are so pretty you could easily see twelve in a row that you wouldn't mind moving into. We spent some time shuffling around downtown and stopped by the Coffee Fox to warm up. They have such a cool little shop there, not to mention cold brew on tap! The Paris Market was right across the street and was a must see for me and a must skip for Blake. It's like a mix between an antique store and an Anthropologie - so, heaven...  I spent some time just wandering around all of the table settings, pretty lamps and wall hangings that I don't need but would happily buy all of. In the mean time, Blake had popped into The Savannah Bee Company (which is dog friendly! Hallelujah!) We tasted every single honey that they had there and the dogs were pet by probably 20 different groups of people.
We walked back to the RV to take a little break and let the dogs rest before figuring out what to do for the night but Blake found out that we were able to stay there overnight! You know what that means? Happy Hour! We got the pups situated and then made our way down to the riverfront to check out the rest of the St. Pattys day prep and get a beer. We ended up at a little brewery across from the riverfront called Moon River Brewing Company and talked to a few locals. Our waitress gave us some recommendations for cool bars down the street and we tried to make our way there but got distracted by cheap margaritas and that was the end of our search.  River Street at night was bright and lively and we watched a lot of the cargo ships and boats pass while trecking back up all of the cobblestone streets (which felt much steeper after a few drinks) toward the van.
The next morning we wanted to take off towards Tybee Island pretty early but our hangovers got the best of us. Thankfully it was really cold that day and we didn't feel like we were missing out on too much. We walked the dogs around a cute little park out there before trying to find the lighthouse... this should clue you in to how hung over we were... because the light house is VERY easy to spot if you have eye balls, and was only about two blocks from where we were parked the whole time. Oh well! The light house is so pretty, and on a warm day, the beach there would be so much fun. There are swings all along the shoreline and a few little bars and restaurants to hang out at.
The drive to Tybee is only about 20 minutes and takes you through the coast line which is so different that anything we see in Colorado. Many of the houses near the water have these really long docks that go from their yards all the way out to the water where their boats are parked. We ended the day with a long nap near the beach and scooted back into Savannah for the night. We woke up to bus loads of people heading down to River Street for the St. Patty's day parade, which we had mistakenly parked directly in front of. So getting out of there was tough but it was exciting to see everyone getting geared up for the day. The thing I was most sad about not having time for was a haunted tour of the city! If you are ever in Savannah you should do one and then report back and let me know if I need to revisit!

From there we headed north to Charleston, South Carolina! We had about a two hour drive to get ourselves ready for another weekend of fun, eating and drinking. Our friends Joe and Allie that we met up with in California were flying out to stay with their cousins Stephen and Mary. We had met Stephen and Mary at Joe and Allie's wedding a few years before and had so much fun with them then, that we knew we had to stop and see them while driving up the east coast. Mary has a reputation for being an excellent hostess and she did not disappoint!
The first night was St. Patty's day and we celebrated by going to a bar near the water called Red's Ice House, drinking Guinness and eating too much fried food. We had a blast and the next day woke up feeling that weird feeling where you aren't sure if your hangover just hasn't caught up with you yet or you're still drunk. Blake and I went for a walk to wake up a little but in the neighborhood across from Stephen and Mary's and were blown away by how beautiful the homes were. We got ready and waited for some of Mary's friends to meet up with us before we headed down to Sullivan's Island for some more St. Patty's Day fun. We hit a bar called Home Team for these drinks called Game Changers - it's essentially a long island but in delicious Mango slushy form - so good and also dangerous because they go down easy. From there we bar hopped and went to a neat little brewery called Revelry Brewing Co. and a dark collegy bar called Rec Room where everyone ate way too many greasy Tater Tots and danced the rest of the night away!
After two nights of bar food Mary was pretty determined to get us out to an actual meal so they took us to their favorite brunch place called Leon's Oyster Shop. If you are ever in Charleston definitely try to get there! It was one of my favorite meals we have had on this trip. Their chargrilled oysters are amazing! I have always struggled with raw oysters just because I know the only reason I'm eating them is because I can only taste the hot sauce and horseradish - so chargrilled is definitely so much better in my opinion. Cheesy and buttery and wonderful.
They also have fried chicken sandwiches, ice cream cones and frozen rose' slushies - yes I ate all of those things in one meal - no regrets. We followed that meal with a little tour of downtown Charleston which Mary narrated from the back of the Uber. We passed the market which has an interesting history, and lots of beautiful buildings until we landed at - you guessed it - another bar! I just made it sound like I didn't enjoy all of the eating and drinking, but I thoroughly did. I get so much joy from eating out and see new bars and restaurants so I was all in.  We sat at a rooftop bar and hung out before heading back to the house and eating some really amazing homemade wings courtesy of Stephen.
One of the coolest things we were able to do in Charleston is get a tour of the city from the water! Stephen and Mary own a boat with some friends there and we were lucky enough to be in town during a weekend that was warm enough to hit the waves! The boys geared up with lots of bait and beer and we lounged out trying to soak up some sun and maybe catch some dinner. No luck on the dinner but we did have a really fun afternoon which is all that really matters. We had a semi fancy evening planned which started at 39 Rue De Jean  for mussels! The locals chose their favorites off the menu - we had the Vegetable Cream and the Mariniere - and they were heaven! Make sure you leave some bread for the end to soak up all the leftover sauce! You'll be sad if you don't! We spent the rest of the evening walking around downtown and taking in the night scene there. We spent our last day on the boat again and finally caught a fish! Blake reeled in a flounder that keeps getting bigger every time he tells the story..
We had so much fun in Charleston! Thank you to Stephen and Mary for hosting us and thank you to Joe and Allie for flying all the way out to the East Coast - we miss you guys already!

We left with sore cheeks from laughing so hard and much worse off livers but it was a blast!
If you have a chance to make it to Charleston it's such a cool city - we really loved it, but - movin' on!

See you guys in North Carolina!
